3 ways to take Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has quickly become one of our most popular ranges.

Yet one of the common questions we are often asked is, "... but what’s the best way to take it?"

That’s why we’ve written this blog to pass on our favourite ways to drink Apple Cider Vinegar, create some tasty tonics, and learn how to mix up a healthy storm in your kitchen!

From recipes that help support your immune system, to ideas that are perfect for when you’re making a round for the family, here are three of our favourites.

And of course, if you prefer there is always the simple and easy way of taking Apple Cider Vinegar which is to drink a small amount neat from a glass or diluted with water or even orange juice, which many of our customers prefer.

1. EVERYDAY HEALTH TONIC

"This tonic is a brilliant booster for everyday health and a must-have remedy to use during flu season," says cook and author Rachel de Thample.

"The ginger helps to calm inflammation and create internal heat. The cayenne acts to boost circulation and horseradish is a decongestant, while garlic and onion help with overall health."

Opt for fresh, organic ingredients to maximise benefits, and if one of them is unavailable, simply double up on one of the other ingredients if you like."

Here's the recipe.

Makes 6 x 50ml shot-size drinks
2 tablespoons chopped garlic
2 tablespoons chopped onion
2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger
2 tablespoons grated horseradish root
2 tablespoons chopped cayenne peppers (or any seasonally available hot peppers)
350ml Manuka Doctor Apple Cider Vinegar

Pile the garlic, onion, ginger, horseradish and peppers into a 350ml lidded jar. Fill the jar with raw apple cider vinegar. Close the lid tightly and shake. Store in a cool dark place.

Shake at least once a day for two weeks. Then, filter the tonic through a clean piece of muslin, pour into a sterilised bottle and label. It will keep at room temperature for up to six months.

Take as soon as you feel you need it, take a 50ml shot-size small drink three times daily, before food.

2. MIDDAY ACV TEA TOP UP

A homemade tea with ACV can be a great alternative to other caffeinated hot drinks.

Try combining 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and a dash of cayenne pepper in a mug of just boiled water and sip slowly like any other tea.

For something with a bit more of a kick, try a Ginger Tea with 1 to 2 teaspoons of our Apple Cider Vinegar with Manuka Honey and Ginger, plus a little scoop of coconut oil.

3. THE FIRE TONIC

This Apple Cider Vinegar tonic has a real kick and needs to sit for at least 14 days to develop before you start using it.

In this recipe, Apple Cider Vinegar becomes the base in which ginger, turmeric, horseradish, habanero peppers, garlic, and a few other ingredients turn into a flavourful, spicy and very active tonic.

In a twist on an old folk remedy, this can simply be drunk in a short glass, or used as a salad dressing or stirred into soups.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup fresh ginger root (peeled and sliced)
1/2 cup horseradish root (peeled and grated)
1 onion (sliced)
6 cloves garlic (peeled and gently crushed)
2 habanero, Scotch bonnet, jalapeño, or Serrano peppers (sliced)
1 lemon (sliced)
1 3-inch piece of turmeric root (peeled and grated or sliced very thin)
1 stalk of lemongrass (sliced on the diagonal)
1 bottle of Manuka Doctor’s Apple Cider Vinegar

Layer the ginger, horseradish, onion, garlic, habanero peppers, lemon, turmeric, and lemongrass in a large glass jar. (Alternatively, place all the ingredients in a blender and pulse).

Pour the vinegar over the roots and vegetables and fill the jar to the top.

Cover the jar with plastic or waxed paper before screwing on the lid. Place the jar in a cool, dark place for at least 14 and up to 60 days (it will keep getting stronger) and shake the mixture once a day.

After aging the mixture, strain thoroughly through a very fine sieve and squeeze all liquid out of the solids. Discard the plant matter and decant the tonic in clean jars.

Tips:
You can keep this tonic in the fridge or at room temperature and it should last for months.
You can mix it in hot water with a bit of honey to taste, but leave it unsweetened if you're using it in cooking.
Start by taking a tablespoon each day and work up to a small shot.
