The origin of a Hot Toddy is largely unknown, many believe it originated from Scotland, where the warm whisky-infused drink would help ease cold winter nights. Others believe it was first drunk in India and comes from the Hindu Tārī, a drink made from the sap of the toddy palm. Later made into an alcoholic drink. The British loved it so much, it quickly made its way to the UK.

Winter Warmer - The Hot Toddy

Hot Toddies are traditional slow sippers or night caps. If you order one at a bar you’ll probably receive one with whiskey but if you prefer you can make your hot toddy with dark rum or brandy too. Here’s how:

  1. Peel or grate a chunk of Ginger, pour over boiling water and leave to cool slightly.
  2. Next mix in a full tablespoon of the Manuka honey.
  3. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon.
  4. Finally, and optionally, add in a little whiskey.
  5. Enjoy!
