HONEY VS. COUGH MEDICINE
A 2018 study published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found that honey may be more effective than over-the-counter treatments for children’s coughs, especially in reducing cough frequency and severity. While this study wasn’t specific to Manuka honey, its findings support honey’s general effectiveness as a natural cough suppressant.
ANTIBIOTICS ALTERNATIVE
A 2020 systematic review published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine concluded that honey is more effective than usual care for improving symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, particularly cough frequency and severity. Honey was found to be a better alternative to antibiotics in many cases. [BMJ Study]
SOOTHES SORE THROATS
Manuka honey's MGO content has been studied for its antibacterial effects, particularly against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus pyogenes – two bacteria commonly linked to sore throats and infections.
